Ferrari J50: A Beautiful Mix of Old and New

This is the Ferrari J50. It’s a limited run model, marking 50 years of selling Ferraris for Japan. Though essentially it is a clone of the new Ferrari 488 Spider, the styling cues are different, mixing a low-slung look with lines and accents that appear inspired by Ferraris of the past. Reportedly, only 10 of this model will be made available—sad news indeed for such a beautiful car!

The numbers makes it just as good as most supercars of today:

Underneath its skin sits a Ferrari 488 Spider, with its 3.9-litre turbo V8 tuned up by 20bhp, to 681bhp. It did not need this, but we welcome the additional power nonetheless. Expect incremental gains over the standard Spider’s 3.0sec 0-62mph time and 202mph top speed.

The design though makes it one of a kind. From Core77’s story:

Some in the design world call that “sunk down in the body” look the “helmet visor” effect, which Ferrari claims in their press release “is reminiscent of Ferrari’s open competition barchettas (a word referring to their early roadsters that were like “little boats”—Ed.) going as far back as the 1950s.”
