The headline may sound too grand, but it’s likely forgiven considering we’re talking about one of motorsports’ most hallowed grounds—the Nürburgring Nordschleife! Honda’s 2018 Civic Type R now holds the fastest time for a front-wheel drive vehicle around the ring, beating the previous record by more than five seconds.
The new time of 7:43.8 beats the 7:47.19 set by the Volkswagen GTI Clubsport S just a few months ago. Before the GTI, the record belonged to the previous-generation Type R, making this an even sweeter conquest.
To put these numbers into context, these times are actually faster than some previous generation supercars. Two decades ago, beating the 8-minute mark for a bridge-to-gantry Nordschleife lap was thought to be close to impossible for non-race spec production vehicles. And now we have front wheel drives besting the mark!
