The Next Evolution: Hyundai Unveils the All-New NEXO FCEV

Hyundai Motor Company has introduced its all-new NEXO fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV), a next-generation mid-size SUV, at the Seoul Mobility Show in Korea.

Marking a milestone in hydrogen mobility, the NEXO combines advanced fuel cell technology with a bold design, delivering zero tailpipe emissions, impressive efficiency, and enhanced safety.

With a targeted range of over 700 km from a five-minute charge, the NEXO ensures peace of mind for drivers by prioritizing safety with comprehensive features aimed at achieving top-tier safety ratings. This second-generation FCEV highlights Hyundai’s 27 years of experience in fuel cell technology, underscoring its commitment to diversified vehicle electrification, which spans battery electric vehicles (BEVs), hybrids, and fuel cell models.

Sophisticated Design and Comfort

Inspired by Hyundai’s INITIUM concept, the NEXO adopts the brand’s “Art of Steel” design language, emphasizing resilience and versatility. Bold lines, a sturdy arch-shaped cross section, and durable horizontal groove patterns convey strength suited to both urban and outdoor lifestyles. Signature “HTWO Lamps” symbolize Hyundai Motor Group’s hydrogen vision, adding unique design cues, including recognizable 4 Dot Lamps for nighttime distinction.

The NEXO is offered in six colors, including Goyo Copper Pearl, a shade inspired by Korea’s nature and culture. Named after the Korean word “Goyo,” meaning serene, the color showcases depth and richness achieved through a three-coat paint process.

Inside, the NEXO boasts a spacious and luxurious cabin. Rich padding, intuitive controls, and a curved, driver-centric display create an engaging experience. Premium Relaxation Seats, ventilated second-row seating, and increased knee clearance enhance passenger comfort. The rear cargo space accommodates up to 993 liters, providing ample storage for families. Sustainable materials, including bio-process leather and recycled PET fabrics, affirm Hyundai’s eco-conscious approach.

Powertrain Innovation for Improved Performance

The all-new NEXO introduces cutting-edge enhancements to its fuel cell and powertrain systems. The fuel cell system now delivers 110 kW of maximum gross power, a 16% improvement over the previous generation, complemented by an upgraded motor providing 150 kW of power. With the total output elevated to 190 kW and acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h reduced to 7.8 seconds, the NEXO offers smooth and agile driving.

Improvements in fuel efficiency, increased hydrogen tank capacity (6.69 kg), and aerodynamic optimization have further enhanced its all-electric range (AER). Low-temperature durability and features like an anti-freezing function enhance year-round usability. Technologies such as Active Noise Control-Road (ANC-R) and sound-absorbing tires improve driving refinement. European-spec models also offer towing capabilities of up to 1,000 kg.

Hyundai’s e-Handling system boosts performance by optimizing grip and stability, while Smart Regenerative System (SRS) enhances braking convenience by adapting to navigation data and road conditions, making hydrogen mobility more intuitive.

Innovative Features and Advanced Technology

The NEXO integrates user-centric features like a column-type shift lever for increased cockpit space, an FCEV Route Planner for efficient navigation, and a sleek ccNC system combining dual 12.3-inch displays with generative AI voice recognition for seamless interaction. Wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and a premium Bang & Olufsen sound system further elevate the in-car experience.

Convenience features include dual wireless charging with cooling fans, vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality to power electronics, and advanced digital mirror systems for enhanced visibility. Innovations like fingerprint authentication and Digital Key 2 provide secure and personalized access, allowing key-sharing across multiple devices and simplifying engine start.

Safety is enhanced through Rear Occupant Alert, which uses radar sensors to prevent incidents involving infants left inside the vehicle. Built-in cameras, improved navigation, and radar monitoring ensure practicality and safety in all scenarios.

Safety and Driver Assistance for Peace of Mind

Hyundai prioritizes safety with the NEXO’s multi-skeleton structure, nine airbags, and ultra-high-strength steel for enhanced body rigidity. The vehicle absorbs and disperses collision energy effectively, minimizing passenger compartment deformation.

Equipped with Hyundai’s latest Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite, the NEXO offers features such as Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Smart Cruise Control. Other systems like Surround View Monitor, Emergency Stop, and Remote Smart Parking Assist ensure protection and convenience during various driving situations.

The unveiling of the all-new NEXO reflects Hyundai’s commitment to leading the global hydrogen market. Set to launch later this year, it demonstrates the company’s dedication to expanding hydrogen infrastructure and advancing mobility solutions under its HTWO brand.
