A MERCEDES-BENZ KNOCK-OFF?

2015 Hyundai Genesis

There’s little debate that the current generation Genesis had Mercedes in mind, so much so that without a badge, you may briefly think you were looking at an E-Class. But for 2015, a brand new platform has a much more ambitious car in the styling studio during development: the Aston Martin Rapide. While details are still emerging, Hyundai tells us that an all-new platform sits within an almost identical 196.5-inch overall length, with three additional inches of wheelbase. Engines are a revised carryover direct injection 3.8-liter V6 with 311 hp (down 22 from 2014) and 293 lb-ft of torque(up 2) and the 5.0 V8 with 420 hp (down 9) and 383 lb-ft (up 7). Presumably, the drop in horsepower reflects retuning for smoothness, fuel economy, and tractability. The eight-speed automatic carries over, as well, and we have a list of features and options seven pages long, so it’ll be loaded with content, including a “Glasswear” Google Glass app for their Blue Link in-car OS. The extra wheelbase almost entirely goes into a long deck look to emphasize the rear-wheel drive layout, with shorter overhangs.
