NOT BORING AT ALL

nissan

After dropping some shady low-lit teasers, Nissan finally showed off its new car today, giving a glimpse into the styling direction the company will take in upcoming vehicles. They call it energetic and emotional, which basically just means it has a lot of flowing lines and archy creases. And it works well. The car looks great and you can see a bit of the shape from the Infiniti, Nissan’s luxury big bro, Q50 in there. Some of the cars more distinct features are the “V-Motion” grille, the boomerang headlights, and the floating roof, all of which you’ll be seeing in the next generation of Nissan’s cars. Expect this exact car to take the form of the next Maxima.

A MERCEDES-BENZ KNOCK-OFF?

2015 Hyundai Genesis

There’s little debate that the current generation Genesis had Mercedes in mind, so much so that without a badge, you may briefly think you were looking at an E-Class. But for 2015, a brand new platform has a much more ambitious car in the styling studio during development: the Aston Martin Rapide. While details are still emerging, Hyundai tells us that an all-new platform sits within an almost identical 196.5-inch overall length, with three additional inches of wheelbase. Engines are a revised carryover direct injection 3.8-liter V6 with 311 hp (down 22 from 2014) and 293 lb-ft of torque(up 2) and the 5.0 V8 with 420 hp (down 9) and 383 lb-ft (up 7). Presumably, the drop in horsepower reflects retuning for smoothness, fuel economy, and tractability. The eight-speed automatic carries over, as well, and we have a list of features and options seven pages long, so it’ll be loaded with content, including a “Glasswear” Google Glass app for their Blue Link in-car OS. The extra wheelbase almost entirely goes into a long deck look to emphasize the rear-wheel drive layout, with shorter overhangs.

DETROIT AUTO SHOW UPDATE: 2014 Porsche 911 Targa

2014-porsche-911-carrera_100452826_l

Visually, the new Targa models tread familiar ground–combining the traditional 911 shape we know and love with a unique B-pillar design and wrap-around rear screen, a format common to several generations of the 911 Targa. At the press of a button, the roof’s center section slides back and stows itself behind the rear seats, keeping the car’s sleek lines intact and maintaining the utility so appreciated by 911 owners. Two Targa models will be available at launch, the 911 Targa 4 and Targa 4S. Those familiar with Porsche naming conventions will note that each is all-wheel drive only, and each features the wider track of the all-wheel-drive coupes and convertibles to accommodate the beefier drivetrain. Porsche Traction Management keeps the efforts of the two engines in check–the 350 horsepower, 3.4-liter Targa  4 and 400 horsepower, 3.8-liter 4S providing more than enough performance to trouble the tires.

CAR FOR CHARITY

simon-cowell-s-bugat-2_800x0w

This weekend not only marks the beginning of the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, but also the launch date of the annual Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction in Scottsdale, Arizona. The 43rd edition of the auction will be a special one, as the company prepared a series of special vehicles that will be auctioned to benefit the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. One of these vehicles is a 2008 Bugatti Veyron 16.4 owned by Simon Cowell. When Cowell bought the Veyron back in 2008, it was the fastest street-legal vehicle in America, so this makes it even more special. The car comes with only 1,300 miles on the odometer and all of them were with Cowell at the helm. It features a custom black paint with black interior — this is one of just a few Veyrons offered in American in this configuration. The car also benefits from a full one-year, extended factory warranty offered directly through Bugatti.

DIG OR DISS: 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

image

The first fully revealing official images of the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 have been published online, prior to a NAIAS debut in Detroit. Looking very aggressive, the new Corvette Z06 adopts a muscular body kit with various carbon fiber aerodynamic bits and pieces while the interior cabin features paddles behind the steering wheel. Output of the car’s engine has already been accidentally disclosed, with 620 bhp (462 kW) and 650 lb-ft (880 Nm) of torque coming most likely from one of the following three engines: a naturally-aspirated V8 7.0-liter, a twin-turbo / turbo V8 or a supercharged LT4 V8.
